It’s that time of year! Springtime! Time for the animals to shed their winter coats. Timmy, one of our sheep, received his yearly haircut this week. Sheep shearer, Dylan Weaver, does a fantastic job working with our animals. Thanks, Dylan, for keeping our woolly friends cool!
Did you know?
- One sheep produces anywhere from 2 to 30 pounds of wool per year, and one pound of wool can be spun into 20 miles of yarn!
- Wool can be worn year-round because it is an absorbent fiber that helps regulate body temperature in cold and hot weather. Unlike other natural fibers such as cotton, wool will keep you warm even when it’s wet.
- Wool is flame-resistant. It won’t melt and stick to your skin like synthetic fibers. Instead, wool will usually smolder and extinguish itself when the source of the flame has been removed.
- Wool is not just for wearing. Wool can be found in insulation, carpet, mulch, mattress filling, even tennis balls and pool tables.
- Lanolin is a natural oil found in wool. It can be found in cosmetics, lotions, and soaps.
- Wool is a great investment! It is durable and color-fast. Wool sweaters are much more likely to outlast synthetic sweaters.
- Go green! Wool is a natural, renewable fiber that is biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly product.
