Frosty is probably the most beloved animal at Clearwater Farm. She seems to be everyone’s favorite and, typically, is considered the mascot of the farm. She always graces the the front cover of our annual Christmas card.
When Clearwater was looking for animals back in 2001, we knew we needed a donkey to protect the herd. Donkeys will stomp any intruders, such as coyotes, and so a donkey or llama was needed to make sure any small animals were protected . We were offered a donkey named Molly from a nearby farm. We were thrilled to hear that Molly, the donkey, was also pregnant. The plan was to move mama and her baby, when he or she was born.
Frosty was born on a bitter cold night in the middle of winter. By morning, our little baby donkey’s ears had suffered from frostbite. The vet was called to the nearby farm and it was advised that her ears be trimmed a bit to remove any area of her ears suffering from frostbite. Other than that issue, the baby was healthy and beautiful…she went on to be named Frosty.
Frosty and her mother were moved to Clearwater in early spring. Molly was extremely protective of her baby and as the weeks passed…we realized we had to keep one or the other. Molly was quite aggressive toward our volunteers and we could not keep her as she constantly kept everyone from her baby. Molly was given to a nearby farm and Frosty has been with us ever since. She is a gentle and sweet donkey that we all love.
Two years ago, Frosty was diagnosed with a fibrous tumor that is wrapped around her left shoulder. This tumor is cancerous and inoperable. We have been told that it is a slow growing form of tumor, so we are cherishing all of our time with our good friend, Frosty. We are hoping that we have many more years with her as the tumor hasn’t grown all that much since diagnosis. Frosty loves her home with us at Clearwater Farm and does a great job watching over all the other farm animals. Our two miniature donkeys, Pippi and Daisy, are definitely her best friends. They spend most of their days grazing together, so be sure to stop by and see our “best buddy” Frosty!
